Capture beautiful and unique fall photos in the unforgettable mountain location of Abraham Lake in David Thompson Country, approximately 2 hours west of Red Deer, Alberta.
Join professional photographer and tour leader, Carmen Therriault, for an unforgettable photography workshop set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Canadian Rockies and the glacial blue waters of Abraham Lake. This area of the Canadian Rockies, away from the crowds of the National Parks, is a true gem and provides stunning photo opportunities especially in the fall. From awe-inspiring vistas and brilliant waters, to vibrant foliage, intimate details, and dark skies, there will be no shortage of photographic subjects and inspiration.
Designed for photographers of all levels, this workshop provides in-depth guidance on capturing the grand and intimate landscapes while fostering a deeper connection to the natural world. Whether you're an experienced photographer refining your skills or a passionate beginner eager to learn, Carmen's approach will help you elevate your craft in a supportive and inspiring environment. Throughout the weekend you can expect the perfect combination of expert instruction, hands-on learning, and creative exploration.

Techniques we may cover and practice:
composition and assessing a scene
colour theory - complementary colours, analagous colours
colour vs monochrome
grand lanscapes vs intimate scenes
ICM - Intentional Camera Movement
daytime long exposures
using polarizing and ND (Neutral density) filters
manual mode and night settings
night shooting tips and techniques
You’ll take care of:
accommodations
transportation to and from the workshop location
transportation during the workshop to shooting locations (carpooling will be encouraged)
travel and cancellation insurance
meals (There are a few local options for meals and you are encouraged to bring packable lunches and snacks.)
Recommendation: All levels of photographers are welcome, however if you feel like you need a refresher on camera and photography fundamentals prior to the workshop, you can book a private add-on session.
What to bring: tripod, polarizer and/or neutral density filters (optional but highly recommended), extra batteries and memory cards, flashlight and headlamp for night shooting, shutter cable release (optional but recommended), rubber boots or hip waders (optional), good walking shoes, appropriate clothing for the weather. Full list will be sent to participants prior to workshop.

Workshop Itinerary:
The workshop plan is tentative and will be adaptive to conditions and weather.
Saturday:
meet at a predetermined location at 10am
explore various areas along Abraham Lake throughout the day
lunch and snack breaks throughout the day (BYO food and drinks)
Dinner break (optional group dinner, participant’s expense)
Sunset Shoot
Night shoot for possible stars, milky way or aurora (conditions not guaranteed)
Sunday:
Sunrise Shoot
optional group late breakfast/early lunch (participant’s expense)
time to check-out of accommodations if needed
waterfall hike and shoot
wrap up around 3 pm
Fitness level: easy- moderate (If you are unsure if the hike is for you, please contact me).
David Thompson Resort
Where to Stay:
You will need to book a minimum of 1 night accommodation, but are welcome to book additional nights before or after the workshop, depending on where you are travelling from.
There are many options in the area ranging from free or paid camping, to AirBnBs and cabins, to hotels and resorts.
The David Thompson Resort will be our base meeting area as it is closest to our shooting locations. If you decide to book a room directly with them, they will offer a 10% discount to workshop participants upon check-out. There is also camping availability here.
The Nordegg Lodge is a reasonably priced option, but a further drive.
